Google Pay Officially Launches in Bangladesh: Everything You Need to Know

For the very first time, Google Pay has officially arrived in Bangladesh, marking a major step forward in the country’s digital payment journey.

The launch ceremony took place on Tuesday, June 24, in Dhaka, with Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur attending as the chief guest. The event marks a significant collaboration between Google and City Bank, with global payment giants Mastercard and Visa lending their support.

City Bank Leads the Way

City Bank is the pioneer in this initiative, becoming the first local bank to integrate directly with Google Pay. Initially, the service will be available exclusively to City Bank customers holding Mastercard or Visa cards. Over time, more banks are expected to join the platform, broadening access for users nationwide.

What Google Pay Offers

With this rollout, users can now make quick and secure payments simply by tapping their Android smartphones at compatible point-of-sale (POS) terminals — both in Bangladesh and internationally. This removes the need to carry physical debit or credit cards.

The setup is simple:

  1. Download the Google Pay app from the Google Play Store.
  2. Add your eligible City Bank Mastercard or Visa card.
  3. Start making contactless payments at any POS terminal that supports Mastercard or Visa.

Importantly, Google does not charge any transaction fees for using Google Pay.

Why This Matters

Industry analysts believe this move will enhance financial inclusion and bring Bangladesh closer to global fintech standards. It opens up more secure and convenient ways to transact, whether you're shopping locally or abroad.

With smartphone penetration and digital literacy rising, the introduction of Google Pay is expected to boost cashless payments, e-commerce, and digital banking adoption across the country.

Final Thoughts

As more banks integrate with Google Pay in the coming months, this launch sets the stage for a more connected and convenient payment ecosystem in Bangladesh. For now, City Bank users are at the forefront, enjoying a smarter way to pay using their phones.
